What Is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that lightens the teeth by removing discolouration and stains. It is a popular option for improving the look of stained or discoloured teeth. Whitening does not last forever, so the treatment may need to be repeated from time to time to maintain a brighter colour.

Why Do Teeth Become Stained?

  • Hereditary factors – Genetics can affect the smoothness and thickness of the enamel, allowing more of the dentine underneath to show through. Because dentine is not white, this can make the teeth look darker or yellow.
  • Progressive build-up – Each day, a thin coating called the pellicle forms on the enamel, and it can pick up stains.
  • Pores – Enamel contains tiny pores that can hold on to stains.
  • Habits – Tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, and dark-coloured drinks such as tea, red wine, coffee and cola are common causes of staining and discolouration.
  • Aging – As we age, the enamel gradually wears and becomes thinner, so the darker dentine beneath shows through more.
  • Intrinsic stains – These are stains inside the tooth, often associated with exposure to high levels of fluoride or certain medications such as tetracycline antibiotics.

The Teeth Whitening Procedure

In-office teeth whitening generally follows three steps:

1) Preparation

Your dentist will first examine your teeth to check whether whitening is appropriate for you. Any cavities are treated before whitening, because the whitening gel can penetrate decayed areas and affect the gums and roots.

2) Whitening

A protective barrier is placed around the gums to shield them from the whitening gel. The dentist then applies the gel and activates it with a light. This in-office procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes and may be completed over one to three appointments. If your teeth are heavily discoloured, your dentist may also recommend whitening at home for several days.

3) Follow-up

Contact your dentist if your gums become sore or white after whitening treatment.
